Duncan Lobbied Against Starr For NYC Job? — The Washington Post reports U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan lobbied New York Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio against picking MCPS superintendent Joshua Starr as the city’s new schools chancellor. Starr was reportedly a finalist for the job and was eventually offered a “chancellor-in-waiting” type position, which he was said to decline. Starr has been critical of Duncan’s policies, calling for a three-year moratorium on standardized testing and criticizing the process of evaluating teachers on student test scores. [Washington Post]

Jaleo Bethesda Celebrates “Cavalcade of Magi” — Jaleo Bethesda (7271 Woodmont Ave.) will celebrate the Cavalcade of Magi parade on Sunday, Jan. 5 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The traditional Spanish parade marks the arrival of the three kings. Jaleo will set up a crown corner where children can decorate their own crowns and the restaurant will offer complimentary Roscon de Reyes, the Spanish cake eaten to celebrate the event.
