WASHINGTON — A local grocery store is about to close, but it might not be gone long.
On Nov. 1, the Silver Spring Food Co-op on Grubb Road will close. The store has been open since 2001, but has been consistently losing money.
“That was the bottom line,” Matt Hersh, a member of the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op’s Board of Representatives, tells WTOP.
The Co-op’s other store on Ethan Allen Avenue in Takoma Park will stay open.
“Aside from the board, I independently wanted to see if there was enough interest in the community to try and get the Silver Spring Co-op started new,” Hersh said.
To this end, he created a Facebook page and an email account to hear from the community.
He envisions a new store that holds all of its membership meetings in Silver Spring. Currently, only some meetings are held there.
Hersh says he plans to make his deicision about whether to move forward after collecting comments from the community — which he’ll do for a week or two after the Silver Spring store closes.
“I still think that a lot of people who shop there don’t know that it’s closing yet.”
