Council Approves Pay Raise For Councilmembers — The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday approved a phased-in pay raise for members of the next Council that will raise pay to $136,258 a year by 2017, a total increase of 28 percent. Councilmembers now make $106,394, up from $62,500 in 1998. [Washington Post]

Be Brave And Shave For Sickle Cell Disease — More than 175 people showed up at Congregation Beth El on Oct. 13 for the Be Brave and Shave event to benefit the Children’s National Health System. More than 50 people had their heads shaved to raise awareness about sickle cell disease. [Be Brave and Shave]

Giant Celebrates ‘Reopening’ — Giant Food officials recently celebrated a “reopening” of the Bethesda Row location by cutting a ribbon and making a $2,500 donation to homeless prevention nonprofit Bethesda Cares. Giant says the store got an expanded Grab and Go section near the deli section, six more check-out lines, and a redesigned meat, seafood and bakery department. The store never closed.
