Landon Discrimination Lawsuit Going To Trial — Former Landon School Timothy Harrison claims Headmaster David Armstrong ignored his reports that supervisors were discriminating against Hispanic groundskeeper employees. A Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge on Monday ruled the case will go to trial. An Aug. 12 trial date has been set. Harrison is suing Landon for discrimination and wrongful termination. Landon has disputed the charges and filed a counterclaim accusing Harrison of fraudulently persuading the Wilson Lane private school to join a self-funded health insurance plan. [The Gazette]
Mizeur To Announce Her Bid For Governor — Heather Mizeur, the state delegate from Takoma Park, will announce her bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination today. Mizeur, 40, would become the first woman to be governor of Maryland and the first openly gay person to become a governor in the U.S. She’s campaigning by taking part in a variety of service projects throughout the state. She’ll be at the J. Millard Tawes Clam Bake today on the Eastern Shore, as will Democractic hopefuls Anthony Brown and Doug Gansler. [Maryland Juice]
New Smoke Alarm Law Goes Into Effect — A new state law went into effect July 1 that requires homeowners replace battery-only operated smoke alarms with units powered by sealed-in, long-life batteries. The law also requires that home battery-operated smoke alarms have a “hush button” that will temporarily silence the alarm if activated by a non-emergency condition. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services officials say the new law helps the state catch up with advancing smoke alarm technology. [MCFRS]
