3-hour standoff ends in Rockville, man turns self in

ROCKVILLE, Md. – A massive police standoff shut down a Rockville neighborhood for several hours Wednesday morning.

The incident started around 7 a.m. when a woman called police saying an armed man was inside a home on Azalea Drive.

She was able to escape, but the man locked himself in the house for nearly three hours, Rockville Police Maj. Bob Rappaport says.

The Montgomery County SWAT Team responded along with dozens of officers who set up a command post at nearby Woodley Gardens Park.

Officers turned away all traffic, including people on foot who live in the neighborhood.

Armored vehicles, police dogs and barricades remained in the area until the man turned himself in shortly before 10 a.m.

“He came to the front door and surrendered without incident,” Rappaport says.

The incident remains under investigation.
