White Flint Committee Searching For Members

Montgomery County is officially looking for members to join an advisory committee it hopes will help form a sense of place and community in White Flint as redevelopment gets set to begin.

County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) announced openings on the newly created White Flint Downtown Advisory Committee, which is tasked with advising County departments and the County Council on public services in the White Flint Sector Plan area and organizing activities that market the area and its businesses.

Another major task will be to update the County Council on the feasibility of creating a White Flint Urban District, what Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center Director Ken Hartman labeled a “baby [Bethesda Urban Partnership]. That recommendation will have to be made by 2017.

One member of the Committee (the Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board representative) has already been selected. Tara Flynn, from Garrett Park, has been involved in past White Flint committees and will continue after the Citizens Advisory Board nominated her on Monday night.

The Committee is also looking for two representatives of businesses that employ fewer than 25 employees, two representatives of residential communities in the Sector Plan area and one rep from outside the Sector Plan area to apply.

Other nominated members will include two from the Greater Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce, Flynn and three non-voting members from the County Executive’s office (likely Hartman), County Council and North Bethesda Transportation Management District.

Members will serve three-year terms without compensation, except for possible reimbursement for travel and babysitting for meetings attended.

The following, from Leggett’s announcement, is how to apply:

Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, gender, geography, disability and ethnicity are encouraged to apply. An application, consisting of a brief cover letter and resume, should be sent by mail to County Executive Isiah Leggett, 101 Monroe Street, 2nd Floor, Rockville, MD  20850, or by email to countyexecutive.boards@montgomerycountymd.gov. Home and employment addresses, as well as contact phone numbers and email addresses should be included. If appropriate, applicants should indicate the position for which they are applying.
