Sports tribunal bans Brazilian clubs

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s sports tribunal on Friday banned Icasa from the Brazilian league’s second division and Botafogo of Paraiba from the third division after they filed lawsuits in civil courts to try to reverse decisions made in the sports sphere.

The tribunal said Icasa was excluded for turning to the civil courts to try to gain a spot in the first division because of irregularities involving a promoted team.

Botafogo of Paraiba used the courts to reverse a sports tribunal decision that banned the team from its stadium because of safety conditions.

Both clubs said they will appeal.

If the decisions stand, they will not be allowed to play any more league games this year.

It remained unclear what will happen to the points won by the teams so far.
