Holland’s SO winner lifts Leafs over Sabres 3-2

TORONTO (AP) — Peter Holland scored the winner in the fifth round of a shootout, lifting the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 preseason victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.

Mikhail Grigorenko and Nicolas Deslauriers gave the Sabres a 2-0 second period lead.

Phil Kessel scored his first of the preseason for Toronto in the second period, and James van Riemsdyk tied it 2-2 midway through the third with a power-play goal.

Toronto’s Jonathan Bernier made 36 saves. Sabres counterpart Andrey Makarov stopped 26 shots.

Toronto defenseman Cody Franson appeared to injure his left leg after he was shoved from behind by Torrey Mitchell behind the Toronto net at 11:15 of the third. Forward David Booth didn’t come back after sustaining a lower body injury.

Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta was injured 11:32 in when he was struck in the face by Morgan Rielly’s slap shot. Fellow forward Johan Larsson skated into Petter Granberg’s elbow late in the first and didn’t return.
