NEW YORK (AP) — Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud will miss the final few games of the season because of a bone spur in his right elbow that requires surgery.
New York manager Terry Collins said Friday the spur has broken off and d’Arnaud felt a pop in his elbow on a throw to second base Tuesday in Washington. The rookie has not played since then, and will be unavailable as the Mets wrap up the season this weekend against Houston.
“I just know that one throw put it over the top,” d’Arnaud said. “That’s what made it feel the worst.”
Anthony Recker started behind the plate Friday night, and d’Arnaud said surgery to remove the spur is scheduled for Wednesday. He said he was told it will take him less than a month to recover, and he should be ready for spring training.
After a brief demotion to the minors in June, d’Arnaud has provided power at the plate since he was recalled. A centerpiece of New York’s future, he finishes the year batting .242 with 13 homers, 22 doubles and 41 RBIs.
Collins said d’Arnaud’s elbow is structurally sound, but the bone spur was affecting his throwing.
“Maybe a little bit, but that’s no excuse. I’ve still got to make a clean throw to second base,” d’Arnaud said. “It could have been a lot worse. Could have been ligament damage, could have been muscle damage.”
