Springer misses series finale against White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) — Houston Astros outfielder George Springer did not play in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday because of soreness in his right quad and right knee.

Springer hurt his knee earlier this month when he crashed into the wall to make a catch against the Texas Rangers.

Astros manager Bo Porter said that the day off was mostly precautionary and didn’t appear to be concerned.

“You can say, ‘Try to take it easy, try not to extend yourself,’ but when push comes to shove, that competitive nature is going to take over,” Porter said before the game. “The last thing we want is for it to blow because then he’s looking at an extended period of time.”

The 24-year-old leads the team with 20 home runs, one short of the team record for a rookie.
