Mariners recall Jesus Sucre after Buck designated

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have recalled catcher Jesus Sucre to take the roster spot opened when John Buck was designated for assignment.

Sucre was recalled on Tuesday and in uniform for Seattle’s game against Minnesota. Buck was designated following Monday night’s game in a surprise move by the Marinres.

Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon highlighted Sucre’s defense in making the decision to call him up from the minors. Sucre was hitting .274 at Triple-A Tacoma, but he has a history with handling most of Seattle’s pitching staff and is regarded as a stellar defensive catcher.

McClendon also suggested the move would allow Seattle to rest starter Mike Zunino more in the second half of the season and not feel they are missing anything defensively. Zunino has caught 70 of Seattle’s 89 games entering Tuesday night.
