UMd. lacrosse player facing assault charges suspended

WASHINGTON — A University of Maryland sophomore who starts at the attack position on the men’s lacrosse team has been suspended from the squad after being charged with assault.

Matt Rambo is accused of hitting a fellow student in College Park last month. He’s facing charges of first and second degree assault.

Police say Rambo, a three-time high school All American, and several other students argued outside the One Stop Shop in College Park when the assault occurred.

According to court documents, Rambo punched a fellow student in the face, knocking him to the ground and then punched him again in the back of the head while he was on the ground.

The store’s glass door was cracked during the scuffle and Rambo is further charged with destruction of property.

Rambo, who made his college debut earlier this year scoring four goals against Mt. Saint Mary’s, faces a November 24th hearing in Prince George’s County Court.

Maryland men’s Lacrosse head coach John Tillman who announced Rambo’s suspension has also dismissed Brian Cooper, a former student-athlete who had expected to be a student coaching assistant while completing his degree.

A Maryland spokesman says Cooper was involved in the same October incident as Rambo.

“We hold our student-athletes to a high standard,” Tillman says in a written statement.
