Baltimore mayor to sign ‘Ban the Box’ bill

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will sign into law a bill prohibiting some employers from asking job applicants about their criminal records.

Rawlings-Blake will sign the “Ban the Box” bill Thursday afternoon. The new law bans private employers with more than 10 employees from putting a box on job applications asking about an applicant’s criminal history. Those employers will have to wait until a conditional job offer has been extended to inquire about an applicant’s criminal history.

Positions for which an applicant must have no criminal record to qualify are exempt from the law.

The Baltimore City Council passed the bill in April.
