ROCKVILLE, Md. – A teacher and coach accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student has been released on $10,000 bond Friday.

Police say Scott Spear, 47, had sex with a student from Richard Montgomery High School at least twice last year in a Rockville home. He has been charged with two counts of a fourth-degree sex offense.

During a Friday hearing, Spear — who teaches at Julius West Middle School and coaches track and basketball at Richard Montgomery — denied all charges. His lawyer tells Channel 7 the 16-year-old is fabricating the story.

Spear is the student’s current track coach and former teacher, who taught her in the 8th grade at Julius West.

Last week, police received an anonymous tip about the sexual contact.

A county schools spokesman says Spear has been placed on administrative leave. His trial is scheduled for March 13.
