D.C. area saw record lows Tuesday night

WASHINGTON — As parts of the nation are buried under snow and bracing for winter storms, the D.C. area
is experiencing chilly temperatures too after seeing record lows Tuesday night
heading into early Wednesday.

Washington Dulles International Airport got a record low of 13 degrees just
before midnight and has already broken the record for Wednesday at 15 degrees,
says ABC7 Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff.

The previous record of 18 degrees had been set in 1891.

“Lighter winds have allowed the mercury to plunge into the teen in many
locations and low 20s downtown,” van de Graaff says.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Witt says the
Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport broke its
previous record Wednesday morning. The temperature at the airport fell to 19
degrees,
breaking the record low of 20 degrees set in 1936.

Normal lows for this time of year are around 40.

The cold weather is here to stay Wednesday. A sprawling area of arctic high
pressure that is blanketing a large portion of the U.S. will hit people in the
face as they step out the door Wednesday morning.

The day will be sunny and less windy than Tuesday, but highs are expected to
be in the 30s by the afternoon, van de Graaff says.
