WASHINGTON (AP) — Amtrak’s two busiest routes have set new ridership records.
Amtrak says the Acela Express and the Northeast Regional lines saw 11.6 million riders in fiscal year 2014, which ended Sept. 30. That’s a 3.3 percent increase from last fiscal year’s ridership of 11.2 million.
It also marks a 17 percent increase from fiscal year 2009, when ridership was at just 9.9 million, largely because of the recession.
Both the Acela Express and the Northeast Regional begin in the District of Columbia and end in Boston, with stops along the way in Philadelphia, Baltimore and New York.
Amtrak says its Northeast Corridor is the busiest railroad in North America, with more than 2,200 trains operating each day.
