2 injured when van hits trooper’s car on Beltway

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — Authorities say two people were injured in a crash involving a Maryland State Police car on the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County.

Maryland State Police say it happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday near Suitland Road. Authorities say the trooper’s car was stopped as the trooper was conducting a traffic stop when the trooper’s car was hit by the van. The trooper was uninjured as were the occupants of another car that was struck in the crash.

Police identified the driver of the van as 67-year-old Jerry Benson Jr. of Oxon Hill and said he is being treated for life-threatening injuries at a hospital. The other injured passenger was identified as an 81-year-old District Heights resident.

Authorities say they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
