Arena Stage opens season with ‘The Shoplifters’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Arena Stage is opening its new theater season with the premiere of the new comedy “The Shoplifters” about society’s haves, and have-nots and how much they have in common.

Jayne Houdyshell from Broadway’s “Romeo and Juliet” and “Follies” stars in the new comedy and is making her D.C. theater debut.

“The Shoplifters” is a comedy by Canadian playwright Morris Panych. The story involves a career shoplifter whose pattern of petty crimes is halted by a rookie security guard and his mentor. The show had its official opening Thursday and runs through Oct. 19 at Arena Stage.

The production also features Delaney Williams from HBO’s “The Wire,” Jenna Sokolowski and Adi Stein.
