WASHINGTON (AP) — A dance theater and studio complex is reopening in northeast Washington’s Brookland neighborhood after a $4 million renovation.
The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1sSu7IR ) reports Dance Place held its grand reopening celebration Saturday night after a 10-month overhaul.
The reconstructed theater replaced metal folding chairs with 144 upholstered seats, improved facilities and added a second studio.
Dance Place is housed in a former welding workshop near Catholic University. Since moving to Brookland in 1986, it has become one of the area’s most vibrant presenters and training facilities for modern dance. It offers daily classes for adults and children and weekend performances.
The group raised $3.4 million it needed for renovations, including funds from the city and National Endowment for the Arts. Dance Place still needs to raise $600,000 to complete the project.
