Fraser fir is Virginia’s 2014 Christmas tree champ

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia growers have named a 7-foot-tall Fraser fir as the state’s 2014 Grand Champion Christmas Tree.

The tree was grown by John and Virginia Carroll of Claybrooke Farm in Louisa County. It won the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association’s competition during the group’s annual conference held recently in Winchester.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the Carrolls will provide a Christmas tree for the Governor’s Mansion this year. A tree from their farm will represent Virginia in the 2015 national contest.

A wreath designed by Gwen Jones of Jones Tree Farm in Spotsylvania won the grand champion title in the wreath category. Jones will provide a wreath to decorate the front door of the Governor’s Mansion during the holiday season.
