More than 2.5K attend Va. Craft Brewers Fest

ROSELAND, Va. (AP) — More than 2,500 people sampled tastings from 51 Virginia craft breweries at the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Fest in Nelson County.

The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild hosted the event Saturday at Devils Backbone Brewing Company, which included the third annual Virginia Craft Brewers Cup competition.

Officials say 28 judges reviewed 221 beers in 23 different categories. More than 30 different breweries won awards.

Devils Backbone Brewing Company swept the best of show category, winning gold for its Turbo Cougar blonde bock, silver for its Smokehaus Lager and bronze for its Berliner Metro Weiss.

The event was the centerpiece of Virginia Craft Beer Month. Tourism officials say craft breweries are a growing tourism attraction opportunity statewide with an economic impact of more than $622 million.
