RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man that had faced up to 180 years in prison has instead been sentenced to a one-year active jail sentence after pleading guilty to sexual battery charges.
Forty-year-old Arden Bruce Bourgeois had originally been indicted in December on nine felonies of sexually abusing a child over several years.
Under an agreement with prosecutors Bourgeois pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor charges of sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1rnLv9Q) that Bourgeois was sentenced this week in Henrico County Circuit Court.
He also could be eligible for work release and will not have to register as a sex offender with Virginia State Police.
Prosecutors stressed the family of the now 16-year-old victim in the case was pleased with the outcome.
