Va. corrections agency, John Deere agree on lease

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Department of Corrections says a lease agreement with John Deere & Company will enhance its farming operations.

The department announced the five-year lease on Monday in a news release. The agreement includes 14 tractors, one grain combine, one 12-row planter and one self-propelled forage harvester.

The new equipment will replace machinery and implements that are outdated or worn.

Department of Corrections director Harold Clarke says in the release that operating the new equipment will prepare inmates for jobs in agriculture after they are released.

The department’s agribusiness operations grow corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops on a total 1,800 acres across the state.
