NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy is investigating a fire that damaged a historic home at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Officials say the fire began around 2 a.m. Tuesday from Quarters “A,” the Shipyard Commander’s Residence.
According to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard website, the house was originally built in 1837 and is listed in the Nation Register of Historic Landmarks.
Officials say it is the home of the commander of the shipyard. The outgoing commander moved out of the home about four months ago and the new commander was scheduled to move within a few days.
WAVY-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1q6VJoi) that the Navy is investigating the cause of the fire and an estimate for how much damage was caused.
