Virginia’s most and least expensive areas to get a speeding ticket

WASHINGTON – When a driver gets a speeding ticket and pays the fine, that may be just the beginning of what the total costs can add up to after insurance companies respond to the infraction.

In Northern Virginia the total cost of a speeding ticket can average more than $350 when adding three years of paying higher insurance premiums.

Nerd Wallet crunched the numbers based on the three least expensive insurance rate quotes per jurisdiction for various drivers owning Toyota Camrys and Ford Escapes. Costs per individual may vary.

Virginia speeding ticket fines begin with a $51 processing fee. Costs then accumulate based on the number of miles per hour a driver exceeds the posted speed limit. That additional cost is typically $6 dollars per mile over the speed limit or $7 dollars in school zones.

Nerd Wallet finds the average insurance premium increase for a speeding ticket in Virginia is $64.95 a year.

Combine three years of higher premiums with average jurisdictional costs for insurance and the total fee is highest for drivers in Richmond at $386.55. In Northern Virginia, Falls Church drivers pay the most: $355.26, followed by Fairfax County at $352.95, and Alexandria at $352.26. The full chart of costs is available here from Nerdwallet.
