New digs for Steak ‘n Egg Kitchen to include apartments

A new mixed-use project planned in Northwest D.C. may be the perfect solution to the late-night munchies. Developer Frank Economides plans to build a four-story building at 4700 Wisconsin Ave. NW, the current home of Osman and Joe’s Steak ‘n Egg Kitchen, UrbanTurf reports. Steak ‘n Egg, open 24 hours and dearly beloved by the neighbors, will return as a retail tenant on the ground floor of the new building.

Above the ground floor retail will be 16 to 20 rental apartments, likely a mix of one-bedrooms and studios. Richard Foster Architects is designing the project for Economides, who once upon a time came up with a retaining wall design that created quite a kerfuffle.

The 4700 Wisconsin Ave. design appears pretty straightforward, with a rooftop deck and room for a basement retail use as well as on the space on the first floor. Economides has asked for zoning relief from providing most of the required parking. His plan calls for three spaces when zoning rules require 19.

Three spots is not many parking spaces, but in his filing with D.C.’s Board of Zoning Adjustment Economides argues that the site is too small to accommodate usually required parking and that the location is very well served by alternate transportation, including the Tenleytown Metro just blocks away. In addition, the developer plans to assist residents by offering memberships to Capital Bikeshare and car-share programs.
