Sailor aboard Va.-based destroyer dies

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Pentagon says a sailor assigned to a Norfolk-based destroyer has died during deployment.

Media outlets report 23-year-old Yeshabel Villot Carrasco of Parma, Ohio, died aboard the destroyer James E. Williams.

The Pentagon described the circumstances surrounding the death as a “non-hostile incident.”

The ship left Norfolk in May for an eight-month deployment and was in the Red Sea at the time of her June 19 death.

The Navy says she enlisted in April 2013 and the James E. Williams was her first assignment.
