Gifts, favors listed in former governor’s case

A look at the gifts and loans former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, received from businessman Jonnie Williams, and some of the favors they did for him and his company dietary supplement company, according to court papers:

GIFTS TO McDONNELLS

— Designer clothes and accessories for Maureen McDonnell on a New York City shopping trip: $19,288.

— Catering for the wedding of one of the McDonnells’ daughters: $15,000.

— A loan to cover expenses of two vacation rental properties in Virginia Beach owned by Bob McDonnell and his sister: $50,000.

— Five golf outings at Kinloch Golf Club for McDonnell or family members and friends: $6,600.

— A McDonnell family vacation at Williams’ multimillion-dollar vacation home on Smith Mountain Lake, including use of his Ferrari: No dollar value listed.

— A Rolex watch engraved “71st Governor of Virginia,” paid for by Williams and given to Bob McDonnell by his wife as a Christmas gift: $6,500.

— Dinner with Williams and a scientific researcher at a Richmond restaurant: $1,423.

— A loan to MoBo Real Estate Partners, the vacation home rental firm owned by Bob McDonnell and his sister: $50,000.

— Another loan to MoBo: $20,000.

— A Labor Day weekend vacation at a luxury resort in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, financed mostly by Williams: No dollar value listed.

— Round-trip airline tickets for two of the McDonnells’ daughters to attend a bachelorette party in Savannah, Georgia: No dollar value listed.

FAVORS FOR WILLIAMS

— Bob McDonnell arranges a meeting for Williams with the state health secretary to discuss Star Scientific’s products.

— The McDonnells attend a dinner and seminar aimed at persuading doctors to recommend Star Scientific’s smoking-cessation product. The governor makes brief remarks supporting the company and allows the company to use his picture from the event on its social media sites.

— Maureen McDonnell flies on Williams’ personal aircraft to Star Scientific promotional events in Florida and in Maryland, where the possibility of pursuing research funding from a state tobacco commission is discussed. No grant funding was ever approved.

— At the governor’s urging, Maureen McDonnell, Williams and a state health official meet at the Executive Mansion to talk about possible clinical trials on the dietary supplement Anatabloc. Williams suggests having state government employees use Anatabloc as a control group for studies.

— The McDonnells host an Anatabloc product launch reception at the Executive Mansion, where the governor speaks in favor of further studies.

— Maureen McDonnell is the featured guest at Star Scientific promotional events at a Richmond hotel and in Michigan.

— Maureen McDonnell allows Williams to invite Star Scientific executives and others to an Executive Mansion reception for health care leaders organized by the state health secretary, who had not invited them.

— Maureen McDonnell emails a top gubernatorial aide and says her husband “wants to know why nothing has developed w studies” after Williams “gave $200,000.”

— Bob McDonnell emails the same aide stating “Pls see me about anatabloc issues” and the aide responds: “Will do. We need to be careful with this issue.”

— During a meeting with his secretary of administration to discuss the state employee health plan, Bob McDonnell pulls some Anatabloc out of his pocket, touts its benefits and asks the official and her assistant to meet with the “Anatabloc people.”

— Maureen McDonnell invites Williams to use one of the McDonnell family’s beach houses and says she will “bring Bob down and then you’d have some private time to talk somewhere he’s comfortable.”
