CHATHAM, Va. (AP) — A federal agency plans to study two dams in Chatham to determine what can be done to bring them up to date.
Chatham Town Manager Edmund Giles tells The Danville Register & Bee (http://bit.ly/1p5UNmD ) that the Natural Resources Conservation Service has allocated $350,000 for each study.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has deemed both the Cherrystone and Roaring Fork dams “high hazard” because their spillway capacity is too small in the event of a flood. The dams were built in the 1960s and no longer meet the state’s flood criteria.
Tom Roberts with the Department of Conservation and Recreation says the federal agency’s studies will be submitted to the state agency for review.
Roberts says the state agency then will determine whether to approve the plans.
