Virginia man gets 4 years in prepaid card scheme

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — A Newport News man convicted in a prepaid debit card scam has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say 27- year-old Jamal Greene was sentenced recently in federal court for his role in the scheme to defraud prepaid card provider UniRush LLC.

Prosecutors say UniRush discovered an error in its computer system that enabled customers to fraudulently load funds to their prepaid cards. Greene found out about it and recruited others to participate.

The company lost $5.5 million due to fraudulent conduct from 2010 to 2012.

In addition to his sentence, Greene was ordered to pay more than $817,000 restitution.
