OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Ocean City officials say a 17-year-old swimmer pulled from the water after a major rescue effort has died.
Ocean City spokeswoman Jessica Waters says the boy was caught in a rip current in the ocean off 92nd Street. Rescuers received a call for help Friday about 2 p.m. when the swimmer was submerged under water.
Beach patrol rescuers were assisted by the Ocean City fire and police departments, U.S. Coast Guard and Maryland police agencies in searching for the swimmer. In total, 30 rescue swimmers joined the effort.
The swimmer was pronounced dead at a hospital.
An 18-year-old Montgomery County man drowned in Ocean City on June 2. Before that, The Daily Times (http://delmarvane.ws/1qHZOBx ) reports the last time a swimmer died while lifeguards were on duty was in 2007.
