Poe Museum in Va. acquires important sculpture

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond has acquired a life- sized statue of the famed writer produced in 1857.

The sculpture by artist Charles Rudy depicts a seated Poe holding a pen and paper. It is the plaster model for the bronze statue now in the Virginia State Capitol Square.

Officials say it is the first full-length sculpture to enter the museum.

The sculpture is currently being conserved in preparation for its first public exhibition in the exhibit Poe 3-D.

The exhibit that opens June 26 also will feature busts of Poe by George Julian Zolnay, Edmund Quinn and others. It will run through Oct. 19.
