NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk man has been sentenced to 6½ years in prison for conspiring with four other people to steal $87,000 from applicants for housing at an apartment complex.
The U.S. attorney’s office says 29-year-old Donte L. Battin was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Norfolk. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in January.
According to U.S. District Court documents, Battin and his four accomplices worked together for three months early last year to steal personal information from those who applied for housing at the North Shore Gardens Apartments. With the information, they allegedly identified people’s accounts at Navy Federal Credit Union and used the information to apply for loans in the names of the victims and to liquidate the accounts.
