Ex-officer gets 1 year in Md. inmate’s beating

BALTIMORE (AP) — A former Maryland correctional officer has been sentenced to a year and day in federal prison for his role in the severe beating of an inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution near Hagerstown in 2008.

Reginald Martin was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore. He acknowledged in a January plea deal that he watched others assault inmate Kenneth Davis and then conspired to cover it up.

Eleven other former officers have received federal court sentences ranging from probation to 2 1/2 years. Two more await sentencing.

Two other former officers were convicted in state court. They got probation after testifying against their co-workers.

Prosecutors say Davis spent four days in a hospital after he was beaten by officers on three successive shifts to punish him for punching a guard.
