Teen driver in police pursuit causes I-95 accident

WASHINGTON – A 15-year-old male in a stolen van being pursued by police on I-95 North caused an accident that shut down all northbound lanes of the highway Sunday morning, Virginia State Police say.

Just before 9:30 a.m., Virginia State Police tried to stop a white Dodge van at mile marker 119, which is near the Caroline County/Spotsylvania County line.

The driver did not stop and tried to ram into a Virginia State Police trooper’s vehicle while continuing north on I-95, police report. The trooper’s vehicle hit a guardrail. The trooper was not injured.

At mile marker 128, the driver of the van rammed another trooper’s vehicle, lost control and overturned, police say. The driver of the van was transported to Mary Washington Hospital with minor injuries.

Chesterfield County police say the van was reported stolen Sunday morning. State police had been advised to be on the lookout for the van after the driver reportedly was involved in a hit-and-run incident near mile marker 104 (Route 207 near King’s Dominion), according to police.

Charges against the teen are pending, police say. Police were continuing to investigate the incident Sunday afternoon.

All lanes have reopened on I-95 North.
