Police arrest man dubbed ‘Beacon Hill Bandit’

WASHINGTON – Police say they’ve caught the man dubbed the “Beacon Hill Bandit.”

The Alexandria Police Department arrested Carlton Thorne Jr., 48, of Alexandria, Va., on Saturday.

Police charged him in connection with the Sept. 23 robbery at the TD Bank at 557 South Van Dorn St. in Alexandria.

Fairfax County police have warrants charging Thorne with three other bank robberies. Those three robberies occurred in March, September and October at the TD Bank at 6615 Richmond Highway.

Police tell WTOP they believe Thorne is the man who robbed that TD branch across from the Beacon Hill Shopping Center five times over the last year. Police have not yet charged him with the other two robberies there.

In each Beacon Hill robbery, the suspect demanded money, either verbally or through a note, and provided a bag to the teller.

On Oct. 10, police say the “Beacon Hill Bandit” robbed a TD Bank at 7209 Little River Turnpike in the Annandale area. Thorne has not yet been charged with that robbery.

Fairfax County police say additional charges may be forthcoming.
