Report ranks most crime-ridden Metro stations, common offenses

WASHINGTON – If you’re traveling on the Metro, you may want to hold on tight to your cellphone, according to a new report on Metro crime.

On Wednesday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority released the findings of a report, which stated 59 percent of crime on the Metro is comprised of cellphone and bicycle theft. The report also details which Metro stations experience the most criminal activity.

“Overall crimes against property increased by 6.8 percent in 2013 attributed to an increase in the thefts of cellphones and bicycles,” the report states.

Metro Transit Police released a list showing the top 10 most crime-ridden Metro stations. The crimes included robbery and aggravated assault.

All of the stops on the list are in D.C. with the exceptions of Capitol Heights, West Hyattsville and Vienna.

Brookland in Northeast ranks first on the list.

Below is a list of the Metro stops with the most crime and how many crimes occurred at them from January through August 2013.

In D.C., the Metro stations with the most crime (and how many crimes happened from January through August 2013) include:

  1. Union Station – 23
  2. Georgia Avenue-Petworth – 26
  3. Fort Totten – 27
  4. Benning Road – 30
  5. L’Enfant Plaza – 33
  6. Rhode Island Avenue – 34
  7. Gallery Place – 35
  8. Minnesota Avenue – 40
  9. Deanwood – 41
  10. Brookland – 44

In Maryland, the Metro stops and number of crimes from January through August 2013 include:

  1. Suitland – 16
  2. Branch Avenue -21
  3. Prince George’s Plaza -21
  4. Greenbelt – 21
  5. New Carrollton – 21
  6. Largo Town Center – 24
  7. Southern Avenue – 24
  8. College Park – 25
  9. West Hyattsville – 28
  10. Capitol Heights – 33

In Virginia, the Metro stops with the most crime are:
