80 percent of cabs to meet credit card deadline

WASHINGTON – The D.C. taxi commission says about 80 percent of cabs will be able to accept credit card payments by the Oct.1 deadline.

Another 1,000 cabs are expected to have the payment equipment installed during the first week of October to meet the new requirements.

However the commission says it could take longer for some cabs to get the cards.

Today, the commission said they would consider hardship appeals on a case-by-case basis for those drivers who have not yet received waivers and won’t have the equipment in time to meet the deadline.

Cabs that can’t take credit cards by the deadline and haven’t received a special exemption would be impounded, preventing cabbies from working.
