A Maryland lawmaker is selling raffle tickets for assault weapons as a fundraiser for gun rights and his re-election campaign.

Del. Don Dwyer of Anne Arundel County is selling raffle tickets for an AK-47 and an AR-15. The tickets can be purchased online as part of next month’s Gun Rights and Liberty BBQ event.

The raffle and campaign fundraiser will be held on July 6.

The Republican lawmaker is raffling off the guns in response to the latest effort to restrict gun sales in Maryland. Under legislation passed by state legislators, more than 40 types of assault-style rifles would be banned starting Oct. 1 if the bill becomes law. The bill was sponsored by Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration and he is expected to sign it.

“If there’s never been a better time to do it, now is the time,” he tells WBAL Radio.

Dwyer says he’ll fight to help “un-elect” lawmakers in Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties who supported the new gun restrictions.

In August 2012, the outspoken lawmaker was involved in a boating accident that left six people injured, including four children. Dwyer later admitted he had been drinking and apologized.

He still faces a trial related to the accident, which is scheduled for next month.
