WASHINGTON – A Sunday night attack on the Capital Crescent Trail that left a woman unconscious is being investigated by Montgomery County officers as a sexual assault.

The 21-year-old woman, who was jogging on the trail, stopped briefly about half a mile south of Massachusetts Avenue near Bethesda around 7 p.m., according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

According to police, someone struck her on the head, knocking her out. Police say she woke up in the woods just off the trail.

Montgomery County Police spokesman Paul Starks says the woman was taken to the hospital with a serious head wound.

Police describe the attacker as a white man, who is about 20 and who was wearing dark clothing.

Starks says there is no reason to believe that this attack is linked to the three robberies that happened a little north on the trail.
