WASHINGTON – The debate over bottled versus tap is over. D.C. tap water will be served during the 57th Presidential Inauguration.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and the Joint Congressional Committee for Inaugural Ceremonies announced the decision Wednesday.
The District of Columbia water and sewer authority had asked Congress to serve tap water instead of bottled water at the presidential inauguration last week.
The authority’s general manager wrote to Schumer to propose the idea, saying tap water is a penny a gallon while bottled water costs 100 times more and is environmentally harmful.
Schumer announced earlier this month that New York-based Saratoga Springs Water had been chosen to supply water for the inauguration.
Bottled water opponents say that in addition to disposable bottles, trucking bottled water also creates pollution.
