Md. police shoot, kill man after reports of woman screaming

WASHINGTON – A police officer in Anne Arundel County shot and killed a man in his home Friday after responding to reports of a woman inside screaming for help.

The officer, a four-year veteran whose identity has not yet been released, heard screaming in the house in the 800 block of Frost Valley Lane in Gambrills, Md., after the police department received a 911 call for a domestic assault. The officer entered the home and encountered a man, later identified as Gary Petrie, and got into “physical altercation” with him.

The officer feared for his life during the fight, the police report states, and shot Petrie in the upper body. Petrie was transported to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he died.

The woman heard screaming in the house was transported to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the domestic assault.
