WASHINGTON – “Hoops Fest” is back for its 17th year. The fundraiser kicks off March 14 at Hylton High School in Woodbridge.

This year, the high school basketball shoot out competition is raising money for a local boy who is fighting a rare incurable cancer called neuroblastoma. But yet this 10-year-old is on a journey to help other kids.

Trevor Blake of Woodbridge takes toys to other kids in the hospital when he goes for his treatment up at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He even started a non-profit called Trevor’s Treasures to help pediatric cancer patients and their families.

“He was diagnosed with late stage cancer when he was 5 years old,” says David Fawcett, sports editor for the News & Messenger, which sponsors the fundraiser. “At this point, it’s incurable.”

But even as Blake battles for his own life, he is thinking about helping others. With the money raised from “Hoops Fest”, Blakes hopes to travel this summer by RV and deliver toys to children at other hospitals along the way.

“He understands the dire situation he’s in,” Fawcett. “But you would never know that because it’s about putting others first and helping out where he can.”
