More carpool as gas prices soar

WASHINGTON – Sky high gas prices are bringing people together as carpoolers.

The region’s Commuter Connections Program, which matches people up for car and van pools, saw a 20 percent jump in applications for those kinds of ride-sharing programs in 2011, compared to 2010.

Not surprisingly, gas prices were 27 percent higher last year compared to 2010.

And the pain at the pump could be even worse this year.

“Ridesharing is a safety valve in this type of an economy and allows commuters control over how they travel on a daily basis,” said Nicholas Ramfos, director of Commuter Connections in a statement.

He points out that changing travel behavior in the form of a carpool just one day a week can cut commuting costs by 20 percent.

Whether carpooling or driving alone, here’s where to find cheap gas.
