Mix of transit options being considered for outer suburbs

WASHINGTON – Much of the of the focus on transportation in the capital over the last few years has been on toll roads like the HOT lanes or the ICC, but there is a long term vision that would include much more.

It’s called “Super NoVa” and while Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation is doing much of the work — the vision is region wide.

DRPT spokeswoman Kim Kovac says car pools, van pools and much more are under discussion as possible transportation alternatives from the outer suburbs including potential connections to D.C., Maryland and West Virginia.

“We’re also looking at bus and fixed guideway transit, which means streetcars, light rail transit, heavy rail transit, commuter rail ” says Kovac. “We’re really looking at everything”.

There’s a series of meetings beginning February 13 so that the DRPT can gather public input.

“There’s no way to look at the Northern Virginia area without looking at the other areas around.” says Kovac.

She says funding will be the major obstacle.
