Local players turn NCAA heads on Signing Day

WASHINGTON – It’s an exciting time for college football fans. National Signing Day takes place Feb. 1, the first day of the year high school seniors can sign binding commitments to the college programs they’ll attend in the fall.

A few local players are making a big splash on the national stage, including some who plan to keep their college careers in-state.

Check out these athletes worth monitoring:

Eddie Goldman: The scout-rated 5-star defensive tackle from Washington, D.C. signed with Florida State Feb. 1. Goldman, who attends Collegiate Academy, earned a scout grade of 85 according to ESPN.com, and ranked 10th overall in the 2012 ESPNU 150 athletes. Learn more at ESPN.com.

Ronald Darby: The Potomac High School cornerback from Oxon Hill signed with Florida State on Wednesday. He’s been courted by a series of top programs, including Florida State, Auburn, Maryland and Clemson, which he visited most recently. Learn more at ESPN.com.

Albert Reid: The classmate of Goldman’s at Collegiate Academy signed with Maryland on Jan. 12. He distinguished himself with his versatility, speed and ability to make plays, according to ESPN. Learn more at ESPN.com.

Joel Caleb: A member of what ESPN calls the “Virginia Trio,” the Midlothian, Va. athlete at Clover Hill High School will attend Virginia Tech in the fall, to which he committed Dec. 9. Learn more at ESPN.com.

Korren Kirven: Also of the “Virginia Trio,” the defensive tackle from Lynchburg, Va. has committed to Alabama after graduating from Brookville High School. Learn more at ESPN.com.

Ken Ekanem: Rounding out the “Virginia Trio,” this outside linebacker will join Caleb at Virginia Tech. Learn more at ESPN.com.

Stefon Diggs: It’s unclear as of yet where the 13th-ranked athlete, according to ESNPU.com, will attend. The Olney, Md. native who attends Our Lady of Good Counsel High School has visited Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, USC and Florida, most recently. Learn more at ESPN.com.
