Driver charged with DUI manslaughter in boy’s death

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – An 8-year-old boy standing on the side of the road was killed when he was hit by a car Sunday afternoon, and a 22-year-old driver has been charged in his death.

Alexandria police say Victor M. Aldana was driving a 1994 Honda Accord westbound on Duke Street near the overpass to I-395 when the car ran off the road and struck a 31-year-old Lincolnia area woman and her 8-year-old son at about 2:30 p.m.

The car continued down an embankment, struck a traffic control box and came to rest against the guardrail for I-395.

The boy — identified as Brian Hernandez-Chavez — was pronounced dead on the scene while his mother was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say Aldana, of the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, remained on the scene and was not injured. He has been charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI maiming, reckless driving and not having an operator’s license. He is being held without bond.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the Alexandria Police Department at 703-838-4444.
