WASHINGTON – All lanes of Wisconsin Avenue NW at Western Avenue have reopened following a serious accident Tuesday morning.
Witnesses tell WTOP’s Kristi King a taxi struck a Mercedes in the intersection of Wisconsin and Western and then went up a flight of steps and into a building, where a display window broke. A sport utility vehicle traveling on Wisconsin also struck the Mercedes.
Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses say a taxi passenger went to the hospital with a bloody nose, and the SUV driver also was taken to the hospital. No pedestrians were hurt.
Metropolitan Police are investigating. Wisconsin Avenue had been closed in both directions near the scene of the accident, but all lanes reopened by mid-morning.
In an unrelated development along Md. 355, traffic is heavy along southbound Md. 355 near the Medical Center Metro station.
Southbound Md. 355 had been closed there, with traffic diverted onto Cedar Lane.
Metro Red Line riders in Montgomery County will want to add some time to their trips.
Trains are single tracking between the Medical Center and Grosvenor stations.
Metro says there are reports of smoke coming from a rail near the Medical Center station.
Riders can expect delays up to 20 minutes while officials investigate the situation.
