BERLIN (AP) — Former Xavier forward Jamel McLean banked in a running floater from the free throw line as time expired to give Alba Berlin a 94-93 victory over NBA champion San Antonio on Wednesday night in the Spurs’ exhibition opener.
Former Villanova guard Reggie Redding made a 3-pointer for Alba with 5.1 seconds left to make it 93-92, then stole Tim Duncan’s inbounds pass to set up McLean’s winner.
“I just got the ball from Leon (Radosevic) and I looked at the clock and knew I had to get a play in,” said McLean, who also played at Tulsa. “I did a couple of juggles and got a prayer in. I saw it go in. It felt really good. I didn’t know how to celebrate.”
McLean had 18 points and 10 rebounds to help eight-time German champion Alba overcome a 16-point deficit.
“We just kept fighting and we realized we had a chance to win the game,” McLean said.
Former Belmont guard Alex Renfroe and former the Clemson guard Clifford Hammonds each had 15 points, and Redding added 12 points, five assists and four steals.
Tony Parker scored 28 points for the Spurs in NBA Global Games tour contest. Duncan had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Kawhi Leonard also had 14 points.
“First game of the season and we’re all a little rusty. We need to play with each other a bit more,” Spurs veteran Manu Ginobili said. “We just played poorly and they had a great game.”
The Spurs will face six-time Turkish champion Fenerbahce on Saturday in Istanbul.
