49ers rookie LB steps in for Willis vs. Broncos

DENVER (AP) — San Francisco 49ers rookie Chris Borland will start at inside linebacker with Patrick Willis inactive for Sunday night’s game against Denver.

Willis is out with a strained toe he suffered Monday in a win over St. Louis.

The 49ers also will go with Perrish Cox at cornerback with Chris Culliver sidelined by hamstring and shoulder ailments.

On offense, Joe Looney takes over at left guard for Mike Iupati, out with a concussion.

Other inactives for the 49ers include: receiver Quinton Patton, defensive back Jimmie Ward, center Marcus Martin and defensive tackle Tank Carradine.

Inactive for the Broncos are receiver Cody Latimer, running back Montee Ball, cornerback Tony Carter, linebacker Shaquil Barrett, guard Ben Garland, tackle Michael Schofield and defensive tackle Mitch Unrein.
